About Me

Chris Massey
Producer
Consultant
Creative Producer

Born in Bolton, Raised in Manchester.

I’m not sure which career path I saw myself heading towards upon leaving school but I was already at that time buying copious amounts of vinyl records & compiling mixtapes to soundtrack our weekend gatherings on the local park with a bottle of cider or MD 2020. But I soon found myself on a 3 year catering course and working in various establishments where the mixtape creating continued  alongside DJ gigs & promoting my own parties as a side hustle.
By my early 20’s I jumped out of the kitchens and into a 3 year degree in popular music & music production in Manchester where a work experience module saw me start to work at Electriks, home of The Electric Chair, Luke & Justin Unabomber and various venues in the city centre.
From here I was able to firmly establish myself within Manchester’s underground music & creative scene where for 12 years I have been the curator, booker & manager at such events as The End Of Year Riot, Come As You Are, Suffragette City & The Electric Weekenders and collaborating with the likes of Bluedot Festival, The Halle, Pikes Ibiza, The Whitworth Gallery & The British Culture Archive.
Alongside my role at Electriks I had set up my own record label called Sprechen plus managing the legendary Paper Recordings all of which saw me juggle multiple roles from booker, promoter, curator, programmer, studio producer & engineer & music producer.
In 2020 I decided to take all my previous experience and commit to an individual freelance role to further continue working with many more exciting creative people, venues & like minded souls. This has seen me take a role as the creative director at The Carlton Club, work on a project for Manchester International Festival, develop my Sprechen label to mentor emerging artists & producers within the studio and create visual content for some of the most finest gatherings & artists in Manchester including Homobloc, Freight Island & Luke Unabomber.
I love to create & collaborate and bring my artist vision to projects. As well as bringing a creative vision to projects I also have a variety of skills & experience to bring forth to the task in hand including:
- The importance of working to timescales
- Creating a budget/P&L and working within those parameters
- Research & development
- Booking line up for the specific event
- Curating relevant content for event/venue
- Project management
- Mentoring
- Contacts across the creative industry.
I also still make a pretty mean mixtape though have thankfully done away with drinking cider on the park.
